Your motorcycle boasts either a timing belt or a timing chain. These days, most bikes feature timing chains, with timing belts generally reserved for larger touring bikes. While they work in much the same way, they're quite different.

Timing Chains Vs. Timing Belts

The timing chain is designed to drive the camshaft.The small roller chain connects the camshaft to your bike's crankshaft. How it works is simple. The crankshaft drives the chain, which then transmits power to the camshaft that controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves -- and therefore, the engine cylinders. That synchronized movement is what allows your engine to run smoothly, without risk of the pistons banging into the valves and causing damage. The timing chain, which is lubricated by the motor oil running through the engine, is completely enclosed within the engine to keep it shielded from water and dirt.

The timing belt is a toothed belt, also connects the camshaft to the crankshaft. However, they're not as durable as timing chains, and the belt material can get brittle or cracked much easier than a timing chain would. Even if you don't see obvious signs of damage to a timing belt, the reinforcing cords within can grow weaker with time and excessive use. Either way, that can quickly lead to a more expensive repair job.
