BMW Motorcycle Suspension Parts
When you head out for a ride, your enjoyment relies greatly on a smooth experience that allows you to relax a bit and enjoy the surroundings. That's possible thanks to the suspension system installed on your BMW Motorrad motorcycle.
Of course, that doesn't mean you have to stick with the stock suspension parts that came with your bike if you don’t want to. Changing your setup allows you to add a touch of customization and tweak things to suit your preferences -- but only so long as you maintain a set-up that allows you to ride as safely as possible.
The Parts of Your Motorcycle's Suspension
Generally, a motorcycle's suspension is made of two telescopic tubes at the front of the motorcycle and a swingarm mounted with either one or two shock absorbers at the rear. Modern bikes tend to feature a monoshock, or single shock absorber, at the rear since that delivers better performance and a more sporty look. No matter the setup, the purpose is the same: offering more stable handling and better balance during braking, and proving that comfortable ride you want on even the bumpiest roads.
Your front suspension features either conventional telescopic forks or upside down forks. Conventional telescopic forks are most common, and consist of long hydraulic tubes that feature a coil spring inside. The top connects to your bike's frame, while the other end fits to the front axle. The lower portion slides up and down inside the tubes, accommodating for imperfections in the road. An upside down fork is installed in an inverted manner, so the slider bodies sit at the top and the tubes are at the bottom. These are more often seen in higher-end bikes, since they deliver even better handling.
With the rear suspension, the swingarm and coil springs are the main components. The short end of the swingarm connects to your motorcycle's frame, while the other side bolts onto the rear wheel axle. There are two options when it comes to your rear shocks. Twin shock absorbers were first used for off-road bikes in the 1970s, and allow more rear wheel travel. However, a mono shock is more typical these days. They offer better handling and stability, and are much easier to adjust.
How to Spot Suspension Issues
When your suspension starts to go bad, your handling and comfort suffer as a direct result. Signs of trouble include:
